Spend Time Outdoors in Destin

Looking for more outdoor activities in Destin? The new Captain Leonard Destin Park could not come at a better time! Does that last name sound familiar? Leonard Destin is known as “Destin’s founding father,” having discovered the area after being marooned on a Florida Barrier Island in the mid-1800s. Destin was officially named in 1896, 26 years after Captain Leonard’s passing. The name was given by William Marler who decided to name the town after his best friend and first employer. Located right on the Choctawhatchee Bay, this new family-friendly park in Destin was built on the original site of Captain Leonard’s homestead.

The park holds over 150 years of memories and emphasizes the importance of the water in Destin. The City of Destin has said that the park “transports a historic site to a place of gathering that celebrates the spirit of Destin, with the water at its core.” Spanning 3.42 acres, the park is the perfect place to spend some time outside. In addition to just relaxing and taking in the scenery, there are numerous ways to have fun at the park. The Captain Leonard Destin Park is completely kid-friendly, with a playground, splash pad, and small beach area. The Bay waters are the perfect place for kids to safely play. If you’re lucky, you may spot a blue heron or two! The City of Destin has implemented a heron rookery protection zone, making the park perfect for birdwatchers.
