DIY Travel Cord Kit ~ The Southern Scoop’s DIY of the Month

How many times have you gone on vacation and forgotten your charger for your laptop, tablet, or phone, or even your headphones? Or, you’ve tossed all your cords in your bag before leaving, only to find them a tangled mess upon arrival? We’ve got the solution to your problem with our DIY travel cord kit! Not only is the DIY travel cord kit useful for traveling, but it’s also handy for simply keeping your cords organized at home. All of the items below can be found at your local craft store. You can also either use a sewing machine or needle and thread, whichever is your preference.

What You’ll Need:

  • 2 swatches of contrasting fabric, both at 0.5 yards (one for the outside, one for the inside)
  • Matching thread
  • Iron
  • Snap fasteners
  • Small belt clasp
  • Fabric scissors
  • Sewing machine or needle
  • Pins

The How-To:

  • Cut two pieces of your fabric into rectangles measuring 10in x 18in.
  • Pin two rows of elastic along the 18in piece of fabric, about 3in apart.
  • Using either your sewing machine or needle and thread, sew the elastic into the fabric, leaving gaps about 1-2in apart – you’ll want to alternate a little, as you’ll need to fit varying size cables (headphones, chargers, etc).
  • Sew a fastener about 1/3 of the way up and 1in in.
  • Taking a small piece of elastic and the belt clasp, loop the clasp onto the elastic and position it at the top edge between the fabric.
  • Sew around all of the layers, leaving about 2in gap at the end.
  • Turn the whole piece inside out, then sew around the outside.
  • Attach the other end of the buckle with more elastic and attach!
